It’s the seventh and final day of my RAVEN LAKE blog tour, and I’m with Kristina Stanley in Panorama Village, British Columbia. Kristina is the author of the Stone Mountain Mystery Series, which is set in a ski resort very similar to Panorama. Stone Mountain’s spectacular setting plays a huge role in her novels so it made sense to share some of my thoughts about setting with her followers.
Setting is especially important in mystery novels because it contributes to suspense. Think old, abandoned houses. Foggy streets. Setting can also be effective when it goes against readers’ expectations. Ray Bradbury used a carnival setting to create terror in Something Wicked This Way Comes. In my mystery, RAVEN LAKE, a murder takes placed during a Canada Day fireworks show at a fairgrounds.
