Just caught Joan Baez’s 75th birthday celebration in New York on PBS. Blew me away! Joan was an icon of my teenage years, and she looks gorgeous today — slim, toned, stylish. Just how I’d love to look when I’m 75!
The 2-hour special featured Joan singing my favourite of all her songs, “Diamonds and Rust,” with Judy Collins, one of her folk contemporaries in the early ’60s.
Other highlights: a duet with Paul Simon, “The Boxer”; “Don’t Think Twice, You’re Alright” with The Indigo Girls; and Joan’s renditition of “Sweet Low, Sweet Chariot.” Plenty of others.
Guests included Jackson Browne, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Mavis Staples, Richard Thompson, Nano Stern and David Bromberg.
Show ended with Joan singing, Bob Dylan’s “Forever Young.”
All this was MORE THAN just nostalgia!
